NHES Third Grade Mrs. Feeney, Miss. Donhauser, Mrs. Norris, Mrs. Dougherty The 2003-2004 school year will be educationally rewarding and enjoyable for all of our third graders. We feel that third grade is a very special year for children. They have conquered the basics of reading, they are used to the routines of school, and they are poised to make the most of their elementary years by fully participating in all the activities that are offered at North Harford Elementary School. We have so many great activities planned for this school year. Here is a brief overview. The year begins with our study of weather. The "Here's Looking at You" unit will focus on staying safe and healthy. Later in the year, we will learn basic physics in our "Forces in Motion" study. Plants will be the subject of our spring project as we donate the proceeds from our plant sale to a local charity. Our focus in social studies is Harford County. "People Together" is based on economics. "Connecting People and Places" emphasizes geography while "People, Power, and Authority" focuses on government. We plan to take a field trip to Havre de Grace to explore the Concord Lighthouse and the Lock House, as well as the natural surroundings. We will be using the Harcourt reading series this year. It incorporates reading, writing, and spelling in a comprehensive program.. We will continue to ask students to read for 15 minutes every night, and periods of silent reading and literature will be included in the classroom every day. Spelling tests will be held every Friday, with pre-tests on Monday and homework due each day. In math, we will have a wonderful time furthering our skill with addition and subtraction facts. The teachers encourage the students to practice with flash cards regularly to increase their speed of recall. We will move on to subjects such as money, multiplication and division, geometry, time, data and graphs, measurement, and other areas of mathematical study. Students will be flexibly grouped in classes based on their math level for that unit. Changing for math will begin in the first few days of the school year. Every teacher in third grade is dedicated to using varied and enjoyable ways to help each student gain a wide and deep understanding of the third grade math concepts, and to help them gain confidence in their ability to "do" math. We offer links to several websites. These links may be used by the students in school, and we encourage parents and students to explore them together.. The offerings will change as the year progresses, to check back! The Third Grade team of North Harford Elementary School looks forward to a wonderful and successful school year of 2003-2004.
