Welcome to the fourth grade page! Miss Bennett, Miss Covert, Mrs. DeRan, and Mrs. Murrell We have an exciting year in store for the fourth grade students. Together we will learn a lot and enjoy ourselves as we work in our many and diverse subject areas. This is the year the students will use the skills they have gained in their primary years as they begin the path to middle school. We will do lots of reading to learn and problem solving as we work individually, in pairs and in groups. A special focus this year will be in asking questions. Students will be encouraged to form their own questions about the situations we encounter throughout the year. This year we are adding a new science unit called Animal Adaptations. We will enjoy this fascinating subject in the first weeks of the school year. Other science topics will be Here's Looking at You, recycling, chemical changes and rocks and minerals. Our focus in fourth grade social studies is the state of Maryland. We will look at a broad picture of Maryland as we study the history, the geography, the conflicts, immigration and industrialization, and the government of Maryland in current times. Integrated language arts study will be supported by the Harcourt Brace anthology series. Students will think, read, listen, speak and write on many topics across the curriculum. As in previous years, for the study of math students will be divided into groups. The math curriculum will review and refine many units that were covered in previous years, such as place value and number sense, time, data and graphs. We will again be working with facts and operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Focus will be on explaining the reasoning behind the answers. Later in the year geometry, fractions, decimals, probability and measurement will be studied. In support of the projects on which we will be working, the following sites have been previewed. Having the sites on this page enables the students to quickly access the information. It is our hope that students and their families will enjoy browsing these resources. As always, it is important that students be supervised while on the web.
